Trendlet: Blue jean tresses are a chic new look

We like a man's shoes the same color as his belt. And when a lady's clutch is the same hue as her pumps, we know she's willing to go the extra style mile.

We like a man's shoes the same color as his belt. And when a lady's clutch is the same hue as her pumps, we know she's willing to go the extra style mile.

But should our tresses ever match our trousers?

The trendlet

According to today's chicest chicas, yes.

The deft application of vibrantly blended blue hues is giving everyday blonds and brunettes locks that truly, really, and somewhat unbelievably match their jeans to a T. Look around, and you will see hair that's indigo, acid wash, and bluish gray - and that's just a few options from the denim color wheel.

Where does it come from?

In 1930, platinum blond actress Jean Harlow starred in the movie Hell's Angels with her signature pale hair tinted cerulean. Blue rinse was on. And by the late 1940s and early '50s, it was standard for older women - whose white hair would often take on a sallow cast - to opt for an azure tint, too.

The 1980s were big for Smurf-blue hair on punk rockers (and troll dolls). But the color was never really accepted in cul-de-sac or high-fashion circles.

With her debut album in 2008, The Fame, Lady Gaga inspired many to experiment with all things on the fashion fringes, from excessive spikes to corsets. Multicolored hair was high on that list, too. Katy Perry dabbled in a wide array of pink, green, and blue hues.

In early 2015 - to the dismay of many who were spending hundreds to cover it up - it suddenly became of-the-moment for women in their early 20s to willingly go gray. Kylie Jenner and Kelly Osbourne were among the early adopters who sported gray hair with a subtle purple cast. By spring, these same brave hair colorers were wearing a myriad of rainbow hues.

Now, bored with purple and the all-over-the-place multicolored strands, women are painting on denimlike shades.

Who's wearing it?

Your friendly neighborhood hair stylist, your coffee barista, your resident artist, and the model next door. Celebrities who have sported versions include Kesha and Nicki Minaj, as well as Jenner and Osbourne.

Would Elizabeth wear it?

Nope. Not even. That's crazy. Blue is not my color - at all.

Should you wear it?

Check with your inner fly girl. If you believe you can pull off blue jean hair, well darn it, you can.
