Trendlet: Thick brows

Most makeup artists live by the mantra: Brows make the face. Throughout the decades, however, the making has varied, from drawn-in thin to bushy and arched.

The Trendlet

We're smack dab in the middle of a thick brow moment. Yet, today's bold brows aren't wild and willy. They are thick, yet precise and perfectly penciled - a natural look.

Where's it come from?

Fashion started its brow focus in the 1920s, when, like those belonging to silent film actress Clara Bow, brows were spaghetti-thin. Brows thickened with each decade, and in the 1950s, Audrey Hepburn captivated with full, sultry ones. In the 1960s, women shaved their brows off and drew them in with pencil. The 1970s brought with it burned bras, women's lib and unkempt brows. By the 1980s, Brooke Shields was showing women how to shape those bold brows, and when the '90s rolled in, those of us treating ourselves to regular manis, pedis and waxings naturally took our brows thin.

Then in 2012, when British model Cara Delevingne became the face of Burberry, her bushy brows received more attention than the plaids she was modeling. Celebrities from Emma Watson to Sofia Vergara followed suit.

Who's wearing it?

Thicker eyebrows are trending on all ages. Here we should mention that back in July, Chicago teenager Peaches Monroee uploaded a selfie-video on the social media site Vine in which she smoothes her beautiful brow and confidently announces (among other things): "Eyebrows on fleek" (www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfBdBpr7KCo) . The loop went viral, prompting Kim Kardashian and Ariana Grande to make videos and song with the phrase "eyebrows on fleek." Monroee got 70,200 followers on Vine, and a meme was born.

Would Elizabeth wear it?

I've been growing out my brows since the early aughts - when they were waxed within an inch of their lives. They aren't as full as I'd like, and I'm still trying to master the pencil-in.

Should you wear it?

Yes. We should all aspire to thick, dark, full, well-groomed brows. But please don't try to shape them yourself. Our faces are not symmetrical and only a professional can perfectly place your arch.
