Study finds Philadelphia airport number one in unreported plane delays

Ah, Philadelphia International Airport. Hub to the world, former home of our unofficial spirit animal, and the picture of dead-on logistics in action. Well, not exactly—at least according to a new study reported in the New York Times.

Ah, Philadelphia International Airport. Hub to the world, former home of our unofficial spirit animal, and the picture of dead-on logistics in action. Well, not exactly—at least according to a new study reported in the New York Times.

As it turns out, Philadelphia leads the nation in unreported flight delays, which ordinarily result from flights operated by large carriers like Delta and American Airlines not reporting delays. Which, of course, means that that 79-percent on-time record the industry set last year is complete bunk.

Philadelphia International, for its part, sees some 64 percent of delayed flights go unreported for official government records. Following us in the distance is Detroit Metropolitan, at 51 percent, and Ronald Reagan National Airport, at 44 percent. In essence, we need to get it together.

But, as this sort of thing goes, it turns out everyone else does, too—even our abysmal numbers are part of a nationally developing trend. So, you know, no one is good at this whole flying thing—we just don't want anyone to find out.
