‘SideShow': Holmes, Cruise divorcing; Terry Gross in the Hall; Savannah gets the nod; Adele pregnant!

All the celebrisphere is abuzz with the sad yet long-expected news. Katie Holmes, 33, and Tom Cruise, 49, are divorcing, according to People mag and their reps. Reports from the front say she's hired a lawyer, filed the papers on Thursday — five days before the guy turns 50 — and wants sole custody of their daughter, Suri, 6. That renewed the notion, passed along by TMZ.com, that Katie didn't want Suri to get involved in Tom's Scientology (to which, BTW, Kate did convert).Poor Tom. He was evidently clueless about Katie's intentions, according to TMZ As evidence, the Web site ran pics of the two strolling hand in hand in Iceland just two weeks ago, with smiles that suggest no impending nastiness. And People reports that just a few days ago, Tom was rattling on about how his best day was one he could spend with his Kate and told Playboy last month: "She is an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you'd see it. Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity. She's funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better. ... What we have is very special." Katie filed in New York, where joint custody isn't a divorce court favorite, TMZ reports, but the celeb site adds that Sources say Tom may launch a California counterattack because courts in the Golden State smile on joint custody. The Associated Press reports that Holmes appeared to have filed anonymously, which is legal in New York.

Tomkat married in fall 2006, in what was Katie's first marriage, Tom's third (after wedlocks with Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman).

Katie's attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, says it's a "private matter" and spills no cats out of the beanbag. A statement from Tom says he is "deeply saddened."

Yay, Terry!

Terry Gross, who has helmed Fresh Air on WHYY since 1977, will be among the 2012 inductees into the Chicago-based Radio Hall of Fame, along with throats such as Howard Stern (why, Lord?) and Art Laboe. Induction is Nov. 10. Talk about well-deserved! One of our greats.

Oh, Savannah!

NBC made it official Friday: The place of departed Today cohost Ann Curry shall henceforth be filled by Savannah Guthrie, who was in the ondeck circle. NBC News president Steve Capus made the announcement. So the new Today anchor team is Matt Lauer, Savannah, Al Roker, and Natalie Morales. The official debut is Monday, July 9. We already miss Ann but like Savannah lots.
