Knight News Challenge offering $2.75M, deadline tomorrow

Think you have an idea to make the Internet a better place? You have one more day to enter the Knight News Challenge, which will dole out $2.75 million to find the best ideas.

The challenge is open to nonprofits and for-profit looking to "strengthen the Internet for free expression and innovation. The grant money comes from collaboration of the Knight Foundation, Ford Foundation and Mozilla. For the first time, it will award $35,000 prototype grants in the early stage ideas of the challenge.

The Knight News Challenge seeks ideas in tech, public policy, research, journalism, civic innovation – or anything that "advances" the Internet. Applicants can apply at newschallenge.org. Follow the challenge on Twitter at #newschallenge.

Submissions are due by 5 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, March 18. Evaluation of the projects, after feedback and refinement, starts April 18. Trustees will decide the winners with awards for amounts ranging from $1,000 to $1,000,000. The typical award size is between $200,000 and $500,000.
