New information: A note to Philly.com readers

We believe we have resolved a serious problem that alarmed some visitors to our sports section today. A warning on the site that told users the site was unsafe appears to have been triggered by programming language in a widget. We believe the code was unusual - but safe - and that the warning will be removed soon. Please read more about this issue, and help us investigate further, by clicking here.

To our readers:

We believe we have resolved a serious problem that alarmed some visitors to our sports section today.

Early this morning, we received some reports that Philly.com may have been affected by malicious software. To protect users of our site, we immediately took down advertising on the sports section and turned off widgets while we investigated.

This afternoon, our investigation revealed that the issue appears to be with a widget on the sports section that contains programming code that was not recognized by Google. Because it did not recognize the code, Google flagged the sports page as potentially harmful.

Despite that warning, which alarmed many users (and alarmed us, too), we have not received any reports that any user actually was exposed to malicious software. This evening, Google removed the warning.

Please let us know if you have experienced any trouble by e-mailing feedback@philly.com.

We said it this morning, and we mean it: your readership is the foundation of our business, and we want to ensure you feel completely safe reading Philly.com and recommending it to others.

Thank you very much for reading,
