Yellow Corvette leaves path of destruction in S. Philly; police seek driver

Police are looking for the driver of a yellow Corvette who fled on foot, leaving behind blood on an air bag, after smashing into at least eight cars on a South Philadelphia street early today.

Police are looking for the driver of a yellow Corvette who fled on foot, leaving behind blood on an air bag, after smashing into at least eight cars on a South Philadelphia street early today.

One officer described the scene of mangled metal at S. 18th and Moore Streets as something out of a movie.

Except for the possible injuries to the missing driver, no one was reported hurt in the 3:15 a.m. demolition derby.

Neighborhood resident Mandy Gilkey left home this morning to go to work only to discover her yellow Mini Cooper was among the cars that had been hit.

"The blue car next to mine was totalled and I had a big dent in my passenger door," she said, adding the impact smashed a cell phone in the door's compartment.

Gilkey said the Corvette left a zigzagging path of destruction on 18th Street.

"It looked like a war zone," said Gilkey, who went to the lot to where the Corvette had been towed to take pictures of the culprit car for her insurance.
