Not all kitchen utensils should be made of silicone. Cake and cupcake pans, for instance, are just too flimsy and awkward when filled with batter. But this multipurpose splatter guard is a clever invention. Not only does it prevent hot grease or sauce from soiling your stove, you can grab the handles without a pot holder. It's also great for preventing splatters in the microwave, and, as a bonus, it doubles as a cookie sheet.

Set of two splatter guards, 10- and 12-inch, from Kuhn Rikon, $24.95 at Sur La Table or amazon.com.
