With a spot of tea
The Brits may have scones and English muffins, but Wales splits the difference with its own traditional teatime treat, Welsh cakes. Studded with Zante currants and spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, they're tasty as is and even better popped in the toaster and topped with a smear of butter or jam.
-Samantha Melamed
Welsh cakes, $5 for a pack of six at Cheshire Cat Bakery, Saturdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Artisan Exchange, 208 Carter Drive, West Chester, or by special order at 610-241-5502.
PHL spells milk chocolate pride
Milk chocolate has fallen out of fashion, but this exceptional bar made with 33-percent cocoa content from West Chester's Éclat might change a lot of minds. This sublimely creamy entry in Christopher Curtin's "Chocolate Obession Bar" series is studded with Pennsylvania Dutch pretzel pieces - a salty-sweet regional inspiration noted with a bright teal "PHL" ticket stub emblazoned across the box. It's a perfect gift to send out-of-towners a taste of local food pride. It's also a quality reminder of what was good about milk chocolate to begin with. - Craig LaBan
Éclat PHL milk chocolate bar with salted pretzels, $8.99, Pennsylvania General Store.
