Spring festival preview: Maifest at Brauhaus Schmitz

Oktoberfest isn’t the only time lederhosen and dirndls are worn on the streets of Philadelphia.

Oktoberfest isn't the only time lederhosen and dirndls are worn on the streets of Philadelphia. On Saturday, May 2, Brauhaus Schmitz's (718 South St.) Maifest returns for an afternoon full of German beers, cultural celebrations, and Bavarian delicacies created by head chef, Jeremy Nolen.

The festival runs from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m. and is packed with action.

Featured events include a competitive liter-lift competition, live music from HeimatKlange, and a ceremonial keg tapping. Guests are also encouraged to take part in traditional dances such as Mai Tanz (Maypole Dance), Holzhacker (Chopping Wood Dance), and Schuhplattler (Slapping Feet Dance).

And German celebrations aren't complete without beer. Featured brews for the evening include two traditional Maifest beers, Hofbräu Maibock and Hacker Pschorr Hubertus Bock, along with rare varieties from Warsteiner, Paulaner, Hacker Pschoor, and Hofbräu.

Bavarian sausage sandwiches and chef Nolen's signature pork will be available for your eating pleasure.

Maifest is free to attend and is a pay-as-you-go event. For those who want an exclusive experience, VIP tickets are $100 and include a three-hour buffet and eight tickets that can be used for beer and other food items.
