Plenty coming in May

At 1602 Spruce, a quick-serve sandwich shop-slash-coffee bar from East Passyunk Avenue is taking shape.

Anthony Mascieri is looking at May for the opening of a Rittenhouse branch of Plenty, his upmarket quick-serve sandwich shop-slash-coffee bar from East Passyunk Avenue.

Morrissey Design of Flourtown is at work on the new spot, at 1602 Spruce St.

It's on Philadelphia's Register of Historic Places, so Morrissey worked with historians while installing operable café windows. A mezzanine was recaptured to create additional seating.

In a statement, Morrissey described the look: "Reclaimed wide-plank wood floor and timber beams will be accented with blackened metal stair rails, copper counters, tin ceiling, and antique mirrors. The bold monochromatic wallcovering was inspired by the cafe's leaf logo. Playful juxtapositions – such as the combo of subway tile, hot-rolled metal sheathing, and floral wallpaper in the restrooms – keep the café's interior design feeling timeless rather than trite."
