Rockhill has sprung up where Big John's Steaks & Pizza was at 1800 Route 70 East in Cherry Hill (856-424-4455).

Owner Andrew Welder, who as a youngster ate his first pizza at Big John's, not only built a modern metal structure on the site, he also has set out to reimagine the tried-and-true Philly pizza-shop menu - with the bonus of a milkshake bar.

Welder, whose family has owned Pepper Mill in West Chester since 1982, is a grad of Cornell University's hospitality school. He is backed by Marc Oppen, who most recently ran Ocean Prime in Center City.

Rockhill has the look and feel of a diner - concrete floor, open ceiling, brisk waitress service, counter service (with TVs), and takeout counter.

Welder said he's going for a downscale vibe with an upscale quality. His staff grinds meat for the burgers, which are started on a sizzling cast-iron griddle before they're finished on a flattop.

It's also offering a greater-than-the-typical selection of gluten-free items. It's open from lunchtime through late dinner daily.

In Bella Vista, Gene Giuffi of Cochon, the pork-centric BYOB, has opened Square Pie across the way at Sixth and Catharine Streets (215-238-0615). He and wife Amy previously operated Blue Belly BBQ at the spot. The Giuffis said they initially wanted to make pizza but could not figure a way to get a proper oven inside.

Giuffi is keeping it as easy as possible. As easy as pie: a few appetizers, a few pastas, and seven pizzas (notably topped with his own meats).

Giuffi's square slices are not like Santucci's. Crusts are crispy and sturdy - nearly as thick as what we call Sicilian pizza around here - and both toppings and tomato sauce are applied liberally.

He also offers a chalkboard menu for eat-in. Order a big piece of meat, like a 16-ounce cowboy steak or a double pork chop or a lamb shoulder, and he serves it with pizza and apps for $40 or $45 for two.

Hours are noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday for lunch, dinner 5 to 9 p.m.

Peppercorn grinds to a halt

The restaurant in Eagle Village Shoppes in Wayne that was Le Mas Perrier, Le Mas, georges', and most recently Peppercorn has closed. Marty Grims, whose holdings include the Moshulu, two White Dog Cafes, and the Du Jour market/cafes (plus the Plantation, Daddy O, and the Inlet at the Shore), said he would take over the location once the liquor license is transferred. He has not determined the concept.

Barra Rossa is the new name of Stella Rossa, the Dave Magrogan-owned Italian restaurants. Wine importer Stella Rosa had raised legal objections.

Korean barbecue specialist Miga - ousted from 15th Street near Walnut in July 2012 during the redevelopment of the block that will yield a Cheesecake Factory - is expected to resurface in a few months at the CityView condos in the Art Museum area.
