Truck Stop: The Flying Deutschman

The Flying Deutschman

What to get: Start with the bratwurst ($4), because if you're having German street food, you gotta start with some sausage. This juicy, grilled link is The Flying Deutschman's best seller, served with their German mustard on a piece of cardboard with a tiny slice of bread. Rip off a small piece of the cardboard and use that to hold the bratwurst as you eat it, says truck owner Stirling Sowerby, a native of Germany.

Other main menu items include five types of schnitzel ($5 to $6.50), bockwurst sausage ($3.50) and zigeuner boulette ($4), which is chopped steak with gypsy sauce. Grab a homemade iced tea for $1.

Sides: Include fries, knoedel (dumplings), bratkartoffeln (German style home fries) and Knoblauchsosse (Garlic yogurt sauce).

Specials: They change regularly, but when we visited on Sunday, Sowerby was serving up poached cod, Dijon schnitzel and Hungarian goulash. It's a nice changeup from the other ethnic foods (e.g., tacos) that Philly food trucks are offering.

Roll or no roll: The sausage is not automatically served on a roll. We'll let Sowerby explain: "Everything we do is authentic - unless you put it on a sandwich, then it's Americanized," he said. "Americans put everything on a sandwich. I guess it's a habit. You double up on carbs!"

The man has a point. But, if you insist, he'll put your bratwurst on a roll for $1.

Where: Clark Park and Navy Yard. Other locations likely in the future. Check "The Flying Deutschman" on Facebook or @FlyingStirling on Twitter for current location.
