Plan a Philly winter fun day before it's too late

The first day of spring is less than a month away, and already we're seeing a few days of shorts-and-T-shirt weather slip into the calendar.

However, don't stow away your winter jacket just yet. As Puxatawny Phil has assured us, a few more spurts of chilly temps are bound to arise before the season's end, and as they do, we encourage you to take advantage of the many winter wonderful attractions the city has to offer — before it's too late.

This weekend marks the final days of the Wintergarden at Dilworth Park, and the closing of other attractions like Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest are soon to follow. Some of the season's blockbuster exhibitions, such as The Franklin Institute's Terracotta Warriors of the First Emperor, are also on their way out, as are the prime days of hot cocoa sipping and other cool-weather fun.

While hot yoga classes run all year long, it's undoubtedly more pleasant to hop on your mat in a heated room when the temps outside are a cool 30 degrees rather than on a balmy summer afternoon. A wide range of studios across the city and in the suburbs offer the detoxifying classes — which typically sustain a temperature reading between 90 and 105 degrees. If you're looking for a morning option to get started, try Hot Yoga Philadelphia, offering multiple classes before noon each day and conveniently located within a three-block walk from the consistently solid Elixr Coffee. There are few more stress-free ways to kick-start a day than with a yoga session followed by a relaxing cup of java or tea.

Catch one of the season's biggest blockbuster exhibitions before it closes to the public on March 4. Philadelphia is one of just two cities to host Terracotta Warriors of the First Emperor, featuring more than 170 artifacts from the burial site of the First Qin Emperor of China, including 10 clay soldiers that stood guard over of the emperor's tomb more than 2,000 years ago. Only open for 10 more days, Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest is the kind of winter destination you could hang out at all day. Cruise around on the Olympic-sized ice rink while taking in (and snapping) some views of the Ben Franklin Bridge. Toast s'mores in the outdoor fire pits. Play Skee-Ball, pinball, and other old school arcade games at the Kids' Lodge. And cozy up inside the spacious, ski-chalet-style restaurant and bar, where hot cocoa, including a spiked version, awaits, as do other warm beverages.

Winter Fountains serves as the centerpiece to the centennial celebration of the city's Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Inspired by the signature fountains of the 100-year-old Parkway, the major installation is on display through mid-March and features four large architectural, glowing domes. The metaphoric "winter fountains" sparkle each day with translucent, glittery facades and, each night, light up with animated video projections. Spend some time strolling the Parkway to check out each distinctive dome, found at locations including Aviator Park, the Rodin Museum, the Park Towne Place Museum Residences, and the Spring Garden Triangle near Eakins Oval.

Dilworth Park's Wintergarden closes for the season on Sunday, meaning only a few days remain to skate around the Rothman Institute Ice Rink and chill out in the adjacent Rothman Institute Cabin. If your Axl Rose is better than your double axel, head to the Cabin on Friday for a three-hour karaoke night, where you can sing your heart out and relax with a post-skate drink from 6 to 9 p.m.

While not directly in Philly, nearby Kennett Square is hosting a winter festival this weekend that any beer lover would be sad to miss. Featuring unlimited sudsy samples from 60 different breweries, the annual event is dedicated to the finest craft brews of the season, including grapefruit IPAs, bourbon cider, Russian imperial stouts, chocolate porters, and more. Five food trucks will roll in to keep you fueled throughout the afternoon event, which also includes live music and other entertainment.

The hot toddy ranks high on the list of quintessential winter drinks. Once prescribed as a remedy for colds, the warm cocktail is typically made with liquor, tea, water, honey, and assorted spices. If you've made it through the entire season without sipping on one, now's your time to make up for that. Over at Lloyd Whiskey Bar, a low-key, living-room-esque tavern with a comparably much fancier cocktail program, hot toddies are served up daily for $11 a pop. The Fishtown spot pairs Irish whiskey from Ireland's oldest distillery, Old Bushmills, with lemon, a honey-infused syrup, cinnamon, and cloves. Pull up a seat at the bar and grab a few bar snacks — including long-hot-and-chipotle-pepper popcorn and smoked curry pork ribs — and call it a night.
