'CHiPs' stars Dax Shepard and Michael Pena sling cheesesteaks at Jim's

Actors Dax Shepard and Michael Peña went to Jim's Steaks on Friday afternoon to sling cheesesteaks to fans and promote their new comedy film, CHiPs.

Shepard, best known for his role as Crosby on NBC's Parenthood and as the husband of the actress Kristen Bell, tweeted to fans earlier in the day that he would be at the South Street cheesesteak spot to give away treats.

A line of about 50 fans (or people looking for a free lunch) started to form around 3:30 p.m. CHiPs is a remake of the 1970s TV series starring Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox. Shepard and Peña play two California motorcycle cops who take on an evil ex-officer. The movie opens  March 24.

Shepard and Peña are not the only stars who have slung cheesesteaks to promote a movie. The North Philly-born comedian Kevin Hart and the rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube stopped by Jim's to promote their 2014 comedy Ride Along. Shepard and Peña entered Jim's, and shook hands with employees.

"I'm in love," Shepard said between bites of cheesesteak. "This is close to my second-born as far as how much I love it."

Peña, who previously filmed Shooter, starring Mark Wahlberg, in Philadelphia, acknowledged that he could not partake in snacking. He's on a diet for another movie. "I'm dying right now," he said.
