John Hughes, the onetime advertising copywriter turned filmmaker beloved for family-friendly movies such as "Sixteen Candles," "The Breakfast Club," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Home Alone," died of a heart attack Thursday morning in Manhattan.
