Richard Gere in town promoting 'Time Out of Mind'

Actor, activist to tout new movie

EASY-ON-THE-EYES Richard Gere will be in town tomorrow to tout his new movie, "Time Out of Mind," at the Ritz East (125 S. 2nd St.) in Old City.

Once named the "Sexiest Man Alive" by People magazine, Gere will attend a red-carpet reception and screening of the flick, written and directed by Oren Moverman, who did "The Messenger" and "Rampart," with Woody Harrelson.

For years, Gere has been an activist and philanthropist for human rights. Before tomorrow's red-carpet appearance, Gere and Moverman will attend a VIP fundraising reception for the Francis Fund at City Tavern (138 S. 2nd St.). The Francis Fund is a special pot of money set up for the hungry, homeless and impoverished in the Philly and Camden areas, in honor of next week's visit from the pope.

Thereafter, at the Ritz East, Gere and Moverman will take part in a panel discussion of the film and on homelessness with Comcast senior executive vice president David Cohen, Sister Mary Scullion of Project HOME, and public-housing-policy expert Dennis Culhane of the University of Pennsylvania. It'll be moderated by NBC10's Jacqueline London.

"Time Out of Mind" offers a haunting look at the homeless from one man's perspective - "George" - played by Gere, who struggles to find food and a place to sleep on the merciless streets of New York City.

Local breast-cancer survivor featured in mag

A local woman graces the pages of next month's issue of Glamour magazine.

Five women from coast to coast tell their stories of what breast cancer really looks like in the October issue of the leading ladies' periodical, and a woman from our Brotherly Love city is one of them.

Kelly De Vose, 36, of West Philly, was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago. She underwent a double mastectomy and has scars on her inner thigh from where doctors took tissue to reconstruct her breasts. In the Glamour interview, she says she wore shorts even at the beach for four years, until one day she became liberated.

"I'd felt self-conscious about my scars, but there's still beauty there," she said. "I feel good. I really do."

The magazine hit newsstands yesterday. You also can check out the full article at http://glmr.me/ 1VNNDDa.

Come see Trott's film debut

Tickets are still available for tomorrow's red-carpet premiere of "The North Star," starring former Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, who makes his film debut with this picture, produced and directed by Doylestown writer Thomas K. Phillips.

The movie premiere launches tomorrow at 8 p.m. at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts (300 S. Broad St.), before the local theatrical release on Friday.

"The North Star" begins its run in Philadelphia, but was largely filmed in Bucks County over a month's time in summer 2012. It depicts the fictional tale of two slaves who escape from a Virginia plantation and make their way north to freedom in Pennsylvania, 1849.

Trotter plays "Big Ben" Jones, the target of every slave hunter on the East Coast. In the film, which is based on true events, "Big Ben" finds solace in the helping hands of local Quakers.

Expect red-carpet appearances by Trotter, Phillips, civil-rights leader and former executive director of the NAACP Benjamin Chavis Jr., as well as key members of the cast.

Old Birds to opine on real-time Eagles games

Speaking of Trotter, catch him alongside five former Eagles players before, during and after every Eagles game for live coverage of Chip Kelly's team aired on all Comcast network football shows, including "Breakfast on Broad."

In addition to Trotter, former Eagles Barrett Brooks, Brian Westbrook, Seth Joyner, Ike Reese and Brian Baldinger will provide insight, analysis, and player and coaches' interviews at every Eagles game all season long.

Vote now for fave b-fast chef

Local chef George Sabatino, culinary artist from Aldine (1901 Chestnut St.), is now vying for votes in the Hometown Breakfast Battle - a national chef recipe competition, featuring 135 chefs from as many cities across the country - each of whom will battle it out to create America's most delicious breakfast.

Beginning this past Monday, fans of Sabatino have two weeks to vote online at thomasbreakfastbattle.com.

The cooking match was created to commemorate the 135th anniversary of Thomas' Breads, makers of Thomas' English muffins.

Sabatino will be repping the Philly area and putting together a recipe he calls "George's Pork Roll BEC (bacon, egg and cheese) Sandwich."
