Porn star turned mayoral hopeful?

ADULT-FILM actress Mary Carey will be in town for a double jubilee this weekend as she celebrates her birthday and the 11th anniversary of the Gold Club (1416 Chancellor St.) in Center City.

Carey, famous for her flourishing career in porn, appearances on the VH1 reality-TV series "Celebrity Rehab" and for an unsuccessful bid for governor of California in 2003, has new aspirations, including a possible run for mayor of Philadelphia.

During a phone interview yesterday, Carey told me that she's likely abandoned her plans to run for president of the United States - a job for which she becomes eligible when she turns 35 on Monday.

"Ten years ago, when I ran for governor and made that joke, I had to put my age in [the] public record," she said. "But I'd like to start in a smaller position first. I'm thinking I'd like to move to Philly and become the mayor of Philadelphia and preside over Wing Bowl.

"Now that I've experienced it, I tell people there are two things to experience before you die. One is the Wing Bowl. The other is the AVN Awards. But I still put Wing Bowl ahead of the AVN awards."

Carey, a former Wingette, will be celebrating her birthday with adult-film star Lacey Rain, who's famous for her contortionist acts and stripper-pole acrobatics. They'll both be at the Gold Club tomorrow through Saturday.

"I like really loud, obnoxious men. Those are my favorite kind of people."

Philly R&B legends the O'Jays say they find today's soul music soulless.

The O'Jays original members Walter Williams and Eddie Levert, along with Eric Grant, were in attendance for the Phillies' 12th annual African-American Heritage Night at Citizens Bank Park this past weekend.

Williams had said that soul music performed by modern-day chart-toppers like Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke and Sam Smith pales in comparison to the original stuff of the '60s and '70s.

"It's the black producer trying to find the white guy who can deliver that soul music," Williams said.

"They've been taught; they've been shown how to do these things. The thing we do comes from [inside]. We live it. We do it. It just comes natural."

The People Paper's Chuck Darrow tells me that the O'Jays went back on the "Love Train" when they seemed to have buried a hatchet recently with record producers Gamble & Huff.

Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and the three O'Jays members powwowed at the Doubletree Hotel (237 S. Broad St.) on Friday before the ballpark show. It marked their first meeting - outside of the courtroom - in many years, following a series of lawsuits filed by the singers against Gamble & Huff involving accusations of impropriety and misappropriation of royalties.

In their partnership with Gamble & Huff, the O'Jays topped the Billboard Hot 100 with "Love Train" in 1972.

While they were once at war, Darrow said their Friday confab was a friendly reconnect with laughs all around.
