Cory Monteith's last movie gets premiere at Toronto Film Fest

"McCANICK," the police drama shot in Philadelphia last year starring "Glee" star Cory Monteith, will get its premiere at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

Monteith's other final screen role, "All the Wrong Reasons," will also debut next month at the acclaimed film festival, known for premiering many of the horses that end up in the Academy Award best-picture race.

The trailer for "McCanick" was released yesterday and can be seen at bit.ly/McTrailer.

The film is one of the final screen presences of Monteith, who died last month after overdosing on a combination of heroin and alcohol. Monteith stars alongside Chestnut Hill's David Morse and Warminster's Mike Vogel ("Under the Dome"). Morse and Vogel play cops on the lookout for Simon Weeks (Monteith), a street hustler struggling with addiction and a possibly violent past.

Last month, director Josh C. Waller told me he hopes to bring the film back to Philly for a hometown premiere.

There will be more of Philly's own Ana Ortiz on your TV set next year. Ortiz, daughter of former City Councilman Angel Ortiz, got the good news that her Lifetime comic soap, "Devious Maids," was renewed for a second season. "Devious Maids," also starring Judy Reyes, Dania Ramirez and Roselyn Sanchez, is airing its first season Sundays at 10 p.m.

Indiana University has added Philadelphia-born and -bred director Rel Dowdell's 2012 film "Changing the Game" to its prestigious Black Film Center/Archive 2013 repository list. Other entries include Rainer Werner Fassbinder's "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul," Franco Zeffirelli's "Otello," Charles Burnett's "To Sleep with Anger," William Crain's "Blacula" and "Michael Jackson Number Ones."

Hot-to-trot promoter Yusuf Muhammad will present his first collaboration with Red Bull tomorrow at the Blockley (38th and Chestnut streets). Muhammad, whose production company Veteran Freshman is known for its all-local music showcases, is the Philly ambassador for the energy-drink-sanctioned Sound Select series. For his first trick, Muhammad presents jazzy-voiced rapper Kilo Kish, local psych rockers Nicos Gun, Philly's own songstress Joie and rapper Mic Stewart. Tickets are $3 from 8 to 10 p.m., $10 after.

* In other music news, former Flyer Riley Cote will present the second annual Hemp Heals Music Festival, featuring Matisyahu, Collie Buddz, Rebelution and Zion I, on Sept. 7 at Penn's Landing. Tickets are on sale at Ticketmaster.com.
