'In Visible Skin' goes beyond the surface

Emily Smith's latest show investigates gender stereotypes through candid watercolor portraits that reveal personal narratives.

Emily Smith's paintings are strikingly beautiful from any distance. The Philadelphia-based artist's latest show, In Visible Skin, investigates gender stereotypes through candid watercolor portraits that reveal personal narratives.

These portraits of transgender Philadelphia will help guide viewers through the complex conversation of gender expression and challenges the audience to confront their own beliefs of self-representation in everyday life.

The opening for In Visible Skin is this Friday, May 10 at William Way LGBT Community Center, 1315 Spruce St., from 6 - 9 PM. The show is up until June 28.
