Amplify, Starz buy Mike Tyson documentary 'Champs,' plan 2015 release

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) - Amplify and Starz Digital Media have teamed up to grab North American rights to "Champs" and will release it day-and-date theatrically and on video-on-demand in 2015.

Bert Marcus directs the documentary, which looks at three boxing greats -- Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Bernard Hopkins. It boasts footage of their most important bouts, while examining their lives out of the ring.

In addition to interviews with the boxers themselves, the filmmakers talked to a number of notables, such as Mark Wahlberg, Denzel Washington, Ron Howard, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Spike Lee and Mary J. Blige. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The deal was negotiated by producer Larry Kopeikin on behalf of the filmmakers.
