Kevin Hart gives back on a quiet trip to Philly

SO HOW did Kevin Hart spend his 35th birthday on July 5? By coming home and doing some good.

On Saturday, Hart hit up his favorite cheesesteak joint, Max's Steaks (3653 Germantown Ave.), where he was swarmed by fans, including 8-year-old Kyshone Smith.

Kyshone was out and about selling bottles of water and homemade jewelry with his grandmother, Janice Brown. The proceeds from their sales go to various charities in honor of Brown's daughter, Latoya Smith, and 11-month-old granddaughter, Rimanee, who were killed in 2009 along with two other young children when a driver fleeing police slammed into the Feltonville sidewalk where they were sitting.

Kyshone went up to Hart, who was flanked with well-wishers, and asked the superstar if he wanted to buy a bottle of water.

"I want 20 bottles," Hart replied.

A stunned Kyshone didn't know what to do until Hart assured the young salesman he was kidding and handed him a crisp $50 bill before heading into Max's.

"Even though his last name is Hart, he has a great heart. He hasn't forgotten about where he comes from," Brown said. "I wish other celebrities could come and do the same thing, just show their face. 'This is where I was raised, here I am.' "

Hart's other good deed? He jokingly posted a video to Twitter assuring his fans that he supports anyone and everyone he can, including buying a bootleg copy of his current hit "Think Like a Man Too." The not-so-legal seller sang Hart's praises in the film, calling him "funny as s---."

Many television watchers were left scandalized on Friday while watching the 6ABC broadcast of the Wawa Welcome America festivities on the Ben Franklin Parkway.

"Fourth of July in Philadelphia needs to come with one of those 'Parental Warning: Explicit Lyrics' stickers," Philadelphia magazine's Victor Fiorillo mused.

Even Mayor Nutter was embarrassed. He told KYW-AM that the city will work to make next year's Welcome America concert more family-friendly.

He said that concert organizers are contractually obligated to make the free concert suitable for families.

Acts like Nicki Minaj, Ed Sheeran and Black Thought of concert curators the Roots dropped some not-ready-for-prime-time language on listeners, forcing the network to cut out of the broadcast to a picture of their logo. Alas, some profanity broke through to viewers at home.

Although 6ABC surely can't control the performers, did it not know what it was getting into?

"We delay our live programming five seconds to monitor and filter live performances (like Wawa Welcome America). We manually remove all unwarranted content, which unfortunately does create an interruption for the TV viewing audience. We have a high success rate using this system, but when dealing with live entertainment that does not contain a script, it is not 100 percent without fail," a rep from 6ABC emailed me.

Congratulations to Philadelphia Gay News founder and publisher Mark Segal, who wed Jason Villemez after 10 years of togetherness. The ceremony was small, and officiated by Judge Dan Anders. The couple plan to celebrate with a larger reception in the fall.
