Coup d'tiara: Miss Universe Thailand resigns

THE COUP in Thailand has led to a perhaps unintended consequence.

Miss Universe Thailand has resigned less than a month into her reign. Call it a coup d'tiara.

Weluree Ditsayabut, 22, tearfully announced yesterday that she was giving up the title that would have allowed her to compete in the international Miss Universe pageant.

The actress and former talk-show host said that she was initially pleased to have won the title in what was viewed as an upset, but that the hail of brutal comments on social media blasting her outspoken political views and calling her fat had hurt her family.

Wait a second. She's fat?

Ditsayabut was criticized for comments she posted on Facebook attacking the "Red Shirt" supporters of the country's former government, whom she accused of opposing Thailand's monarchy. She also called for the execution of their leaders.

No "world peace" cliches from Ditsayabut.

"You Red Shirts, you get out of here," she wrote in mid-November, before winning her title. "Thailand's soil is dirty because of anti-monarchy people like you."

Ditsayabut said yesterday that because of the criticism, "the happiness we used to have disappeared totally."

The situation in Thailand is so confusing.

In 2006, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was ousted in a coup and fled into exile. The prime minister who was overthrown in this coup is Yingluck Shinawatra, his sister. In between the Shinawatras were a couple of other failed governments. Meanwhile, there's a King of Thailand (Bhumibol Adulyadej) who "celebrated" his 68th year on the throne yesterday. He is the world's longest-serving monarch and has some power, but clearly not enough to stop the elected government from being tossed aside like a rag doll.

* Here in the good ol' USA, newly crowned Miss USA Nia Sanchez, 24, is a fourth-degree black belt in tae kwon do and says that women should be able to defend themselves as a way to battle the problem of campus rape.

Sanchez beat out 50 other contestants from the states and the District of Columbia on Sunday night for the title of 63rd Miss USA. First runner-up was Miss North Dakota, Audra Mari. Sanchez will go on to represent the U.S. at the Miss Universe competition later this year.

But she won't have to beat Weluree Ditsayabut.

She'll be facing her successor, Pimbongkod Chankaew.

* A judge has approved a settlement between Halle Berry and her ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry over child-support payments for their 6-year-old daughter, Nahla.

The agreement approved by Superior Court Judge Scott Gordon on May 30 calls for Berry to pay Aubry $16,000 a month or nearly $200,000 a year to support their daughter. Halle will also pay for Nahla's school, but the former couple will split health-care expenses.

Note to the court: Halle can support Tattle for half that and save on the tuition.

The order also calls for Halle to pay Aubry payments of $115,000 and $300,000 for attorney fees.

The couple were involved in a custody dispute in 2012, and a judge blocked Halle from moving their daughter to France.

She has an 8-month-old son, Maceo, with her husband, Olivier Martinez.

* The play "Of Mice and Men" may not have taken home any Tony Awards, but it still has good news to share - it's in the black.

The show, starring Chris O'Dowd, James Franco and Leighton Meester, said yesterday that it recouped its $3.8 million capitalization in just 12 weeks. The play, adapted from a John Steinbeck novel, follows two tragic migrant workers trying to make their way through the Depression.

It's another feather in the cap this season for producer David Binder, whose "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" just won four Tonys and last week set a box-office record at the Belasco Theatre with just over $1 million for just seven shows.

Other plays to recoup this season include "All the Way" and "The Glass Menagerie."

* New Orleans-based librarian Laurence Copel, known as "the book lady" for her dedication to her community, has won the inaugural Lemony Snicket Prize for Noble Librarians Faced With Adversity.

Copel will receive $3,000 for her efforts, which include setting up a library in her own home and riding her bicycle to reach families in need of books. The award, announced yesterday, is co-sponsored by the American Library Association and Lemony Snicket author Daniel Handler. The ALA and Handler cited Copel as a librarian who managed difficult times with "integrity and dignity intact."

* Paul McCartney is rescheduling U.S. tour dates as he continues to recover from a virus he received treatment for last month.

The former member of the Beatles announced yesterday that tour stops scheduled for mid-June will be postponed to October. He was supposed to kick off the U.S. leg of his tour Saturday. Instead his first show will be July 5 in Albany, N.Y.

McCartney says he's taking his doctor's advice and will take more time to rest. Last month he canceled his "Out There Japan Tour 2014" because of his illness.

Tickets for the seven original June dates will be honored at the new dates.

Sir Paul turns 72 next week.

* E! News reports that Lil' Kim gave birth to a girl yesterday morning at Hackensack University Medical Center, in New Jersey.

This is the first Lil' One for Kim and her boyfriend, Mr. Papers, a New York-based rapper also believed to be the baby's father.

The baby tipped the scale at 6 pounds 5 ounces and has been named Royal Reign - because who the heck is going to make fun of Lil' Kim's baby?
