Sideshow: CBS3, CW Philly collect 18 Emmys

Sister stations CBS3 and CW Philly put a death grip on the 2011 Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards, together taking nearly a quarter of the 74 prizes Saturday at Loews Hotel Philadelphia. Comcast SportsNet and the Comcast Network received seven Emmys, and NBC Philadelphia won five.

Among the 18 statuettes that CBS3/CW Philly won were Emmys for the best evening and morning newscasts in a large market, best investigative report, crime and science stories, and sports feature. Consumer reporter Jim Donovan won two Emmys. CBS3 won an overall award for station excellence; Pittsburgh's WPXI won for news excellence.

CW 57 night news anchor Dave Huddleston, let go by Fox29 in '08 in a money-saving move, was named best news anchor in the region, which consists of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. CBS3's Kathy Orr was named best weathercaster. CBS3's Mike Henry, who seemed to have a hand in most of the channel's award-winning work, won best program editor.

NBC10 won for best team coverage and best spot news coverage. NJN Public Television, disbanded this year after government budget cuts, won three Emmys, and Philadelphia's much larger public TV station, WHYY TV12, won one.

Philadelphia's 6ABC, which has the region's highest-rated local programming, does not participate.

The Lion King 3D was No. 1 at the box office for the second straight week, with $22.1 million, topping Moneyball, starring Brad Pitt, which took in $20.6 million.
