On Friday, the American Philosophical Society will open a new exhibit, "Of Elephants and Roses," which examines French natural science at the turn of the 19th century. The exhibit features scientific specimens, fine artwork, and rare books, many of which have never been displayed in the United States before. Grillin' and chillin'

A Heart Healthy Cook-Off will be staged by the Philadelphia chapter of the Links Inc. in partnership with the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the American Heart and Stroke Association. The event aims to raise awareness of the risk factors for heart disease in women. The cook-off will focus on nutrition, fitness, and food purchasing and will feature workshops, demonstrations, and a presentation by chef Valerie Erwin from Geechee Girl Rice Cafe in Mount Airy. One-of-a-kind cars

The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center will host the Northeast Rod and Custom Car Show this weekend. The show promises 50 vendors and 350 custom cars, muscle cars, show cars, street rods, classics, trucks, and custom cycles from around the northeastern United States. Admission is $15, $5 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for children ages 6 and younger. Dresses for the prom

Fairy Godmothers Inc. will hold the last event in its annual prom fair Saturday. The fair is a chance for high school juniors and seniors who want to attend a prom but whose financial situations might prevent it to purchases dresses for $10. Shoppers must bring a valid student ID. The Abington Art Center invites families to its newest musical program, Sweet Beats. Music educator and singer-songwriter Lori Scherling will entertain.
