I first tasted this elegant red from Priorat a few years ago during a multi-course meal at James in South Philadelphia, and was struck not only by the stylish name - Giné Giné - but also by how well it paired with a wide range of foods. The affordable flagship bottle of the Catalonian winery Buil & Giné, this blend of grenache and carignan balanced the lightness of a mid-weight red with the depth and earthiness I always associate with Spain. Yet it also had a sleek, ready-to-drink accessiblity that was decidedly modern.

A more recent tasting of the 2006 vintage, currently 29 percent off list price in Pennsylvania at $16.99, reminds me why I was smitten to begin with. This wine has an almost Burgundian balance of substance and softness, with the aromas of red berries, violets, and milk chocolate woven into velvety tannins.

The 2006 Giné Giné from Buile & Giné costs $16.99 in select Pennsylvania wine stores.
