Two South Jersey high schools and one area Pennsylvania school district are 2016 winners of the prestigous national Green Ribbon environmental awards.

The regional winners announced Friday on Earth Day were Egg Harbor Township High School, Triton Regional High School in Runnemede and the Jenkintown School District, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

They were among the 47 schools, 15 districts and 11 postsecondary institutions honored for their innovative efforts to reduce environmental impacts and utility costs, improve health and wellness, and ensure effective sustainability education.

"I congratulate these schools, districts and postsecondary institutions for their commitment to sustainable facilities, health and classroom practices," said U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. "The healthiest, most inspiring school facilities can and should be another tool to level the playing field, particularly for underserved students.

U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross (D., N.J.) stopped by Triton to congratulate the students, teachers and administrators.

"What a great way for us to celebrate this Earth Day!" Norcross said in a statement. "The students and staff at Triton Regional High School haven't just 'gone green,' they're leading the rest of the state and the nation by their good example on how to be responsible stewards for the planet."
