The Coriell Institute for Medical Research held its 33d annual science fair for students in Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester Counties on March 22 at Camden County College's Blackwood campus.

Gabrielle Sallard of Signal Hill Academy and Luke Bonanni of Cherry Hill High School East won at the science fair and were chosen as scholarship recipients.

Sallard's project, "The Laws of Splinting: The Effects of Biomechanics and Physics in Splinting," took the top spot in the physics category. Bonnani won in the microbiology category with his project, "The Role of Gut Bacteria Composition in Human Disease: Exploring the Microbiome."

Other categories included computer science, engineering, and medicine.

Judged by a Camden County College chemistry professor and local science and business professionals, the winning projects will advance to the Delaware Valley Science Fair in April.

Winners in that competition will move forward to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, held in May in California.
