follows a comedic tradition of mock documentaries. Mockumentaries, if you will. Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone cited some of their faves:
This is Spinal Tap. If there's one movie the Lonely Island trio holds up above the rest in the music-biz mockumentary genre, it's Rob Reiner's rock-band parody.
Released in 1984, the faux chronicle of a very loud British outfit's fateful final tour stars Christopher Guest, David Kaff, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer as the hard-core heavy metalers, with R.J. Parnell as the latest in Spinal Tap's succession of unlucky drummers. Along with directing, Reiner plays Marty DiBergi, a documentarian tagging along on Spinal Tap's tour.
"I think if you're into comedy, anywhere, you find This is Spinal Tap pretty early," says Taccone. "It's a bona fide classic now."
A Mighty Wind. Samberg, Schaffer, and Taccone are fans of Guest's other mockdocs, too. This one, from 2003, catches up with a group of faux seminal '60s folkies, reuniting for a big tribute concert.
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Justin Bieber's Believe. The Popstar team also recommends those twin Bieber docs, even if they are for real.
"We actually really enjoy his music," Samberg says.
