'XXL' brings 'S' audience to multiplexes

Also in Tattle: Billy Joel weds again, Mghan Trainor cancels, Malia Obama gets a job

THERE MAY have been a lot of fireworks over the July 4 weekend, but they weren't at the box office.

The second "Magic Mike" wasn't so magic and "Terminator Genisys" was more like "End of Days."

So much hype, so little payoff.

No. 1 over the weekend, for the fourth week in a row, was "Jurassic World" with an estimated $30.9 million. For the third time in a row, "Inside Out" finished second, this time with $30. 1 million.

Even with the two new releases struggling, this weekend was still up 6.9 percent over last year, when Melissa McCarthy's "Tammy" and the sci-fi adventure "Earth to Echo" made for Hollywood's worst July 4 in decades.

See, there's always a bright side.

"Terminator Genisys," the fifth film in the series that also marked Arnold Schwarzenegger's return to his most iconic character, took in $28.7 million over the weekend and $44.2 million since opening Wednesday.

"Magic Mike XXL" managed just $12 million over the weekend. Over five days it made $27.1 million. On the plus side, it only cost $15 million to make, one-tenth of the "Terminator" budget.

"XXL" also got decent reviews for a sequel. So what happened? "Mike" may have expanded its Speedos but it failed to expand its audience. Whereas moviegoers for the first film were 73 percent female, "Magic Mike XXL" audiences were a staggering 96 percent female, Warner Bros. said.

Yo, male readers, "Magic Mike XXL" might be a good place to meet women.

What do Channing Tatum and Joe Manganiello have that you haven't?

TATTBITS

* After 6 years of dating, Billy Joel married girlfriend, Alexis Roderick, in a surprise ceremony at the couple's annual July 4 party.

He's 66. She's 34 and pregnant with their first child.

Joel's spokeswoman, Claire Mercuri, says that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo presided over Saturday's nuptials at Joel's Long Island estate. She said that the small group of family and friends at the party didn't know the couple planned to exchange vows. Among those in attendance were Alexa Ray Joel, his daughter with model Christie Brinkley, and actor Kevin James.

People magazine first reported the wedding.

* "Access Hollywood" reported that director Ava DuVernay ("Selma") has turned down the chance to direct Chadwick Boseman ("42") in Marvel's "Black Panther."

Meghan Trainor is postponing two shows because of a hemorrhage on her vocal cords.

The 21-year-old "All About That Bass" singer made the announcement on Instagram late Thursday. She said that "doctors want me on complete vocal rest until they are healed."

Trainor had been scheduled to perform in Atlantic City on Friday and Uncasville, Conn., on Saturday.

Trainor wrote that she's never missed a live show and that she's "truly sorry to everyone who has bought tickets and made travel plans."

* Any student looking for a good internship knows how difficult it is.

Not everyone can work here at the Daily News, after all.

But try getting a summer job on the set of the HBO series "Girls."

Impossible, right?

You'd have to know someone, right?

Malia Obama knows someone.

Because (no matter what they like to tell you) it's not what you know, it's who you know. (Last year, for example, Malia got to intern on the Halle Berry show, "Extant.")

"She's a fan, and she mentioned that to Lena [Dunham] when she came to the White House," an unnamed "Girls" source told Us Weekly. "I'm not sure how long she'll be interning for. It's a bit of a trial thing for her. They've known each other and discussed for a while. Lena and her get along great."

Malia, who turned 17 on Independence Day, is already doing typical interny things, like getting coffee for the crew and keeping the public away from the set, TMZ.com reported.

Who better to keep away gawkers and stalkers than the daughter of the president of the United States?
