Harry Gross: Vet's deceased son's savings tied up by vets' home

DEAR HARRY: I believe it will help to know a little of my history. My father served in France during World War II. I served in Korea, as did my two brothers. My son served in Vietnam and was wounded. My son died early this year in a veterans' home.

DEAR HARRY: I believe it will help to know a little of my history. My father served in France during World War II. I served in Korea, as did my two brothers. My son served in Vietnam and was wounded. My son died early this year in a veterans' home. He had a "bank" account there with quite a lot of money. Now, I'm having trouble getting the money from that account. I am the appointed administrator of his estate, and I was told that I have to be bonded in order to get the money. I was shocked when they told me this. No matter who I spoke to, I was referred to the guy who insisted on this. What's going on? I showed this man (I think he's a lawyer) all my family's history as well as the official stuff from the city regarding the estate. Help!

WHAT HARRY SAYS: This sounds way off base to me. Since you have apparently exhausted the possibilities at the hospital, I suggest that you make an appointment with your congressman. This is an especially auspicious time because it's an election year, and every voter is important. Congressmen have avenues and clout that we lack. If that fails (and I'm virtually certain it won't), go for the bond. It will cost less than going to a lawyer.
