Lee Roy Selmon, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Hall of Fame defensive end who teamed with his brothers to create a dominant defensive front and lead Oklahoma to back-to-back national championships, died Sunday, two days after being hospitalized for a stroke. He was 57.

A statement released on behalf of his wife, Claybra Selmon, said he died at a Tampa hospital surrounded by family members.

Selmon was the No. 1 pick in the 1976 draft - the first ever selection by expansion Tampa Bay. In 1979, he won the NFL defensive player of the year award.

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1995.

Moves

Aaron Maybin was waived by the Jets, a day after he made the team's initial 53-player roster.

The defensive end was the 11th overall pick of the Bills out of Penn State in 2009, but failed to live up to his lofty draft position. He had no sacks and never made it into the starting lineup.

The Jets also put rookie quarterback Greg McElroy on season-ending injured reserve after he dislocated his right thumb in the preseason finale against the Eagles on Thursday night.

Cincinnati added three players off waivers, including former Eagles center Mike McGlynn.

The Bengals also picked up tight end Mickey Shuler, a second-year player from Penn State, and wide receiver Brandon Tate.

The Bears reached a one-year agreement with former safety Brandon Meriweather, cut by the Patriots on Saturday.

Missing in Miami

Not only have a couple of hundred premium seat holders stiffed the Dolphins on 2011 payments but, according to the Miami Herald, season ticket sales are in the low 40,000s, the worst in 28 years.

The team hopes to end up around 45,000, way down from 61,000 in 2006 and 51,000 last year.

Texas two step?

Strong-legged incumbent David Buehler will handle kickoffs for the Cowboys this season, but the team will go with undrafted free-agent rookie Dan Bailey for field-goal attempts.

Noteworthy

Bengals running back Cedric Benson was released from a Texas jail after serving five days of a 20-day sentence for misdemeanor assault in Austin.

A man was found dead at the bottom of the swimming pool at the home of Houston Texans defensive end Antonio Smith in suburban Richmond.

A sheriff department spokesman said foul play is not suspected.
