Schilling off the air for controversial tweet

ESPN baseball analyst Curt Schilling has been taken off the air after he sent a tweet equating Muslim extremists with Nazis in Germany, according to ESPN.com.

Schilling, who pitched for the Phillies from 1992 to 2000 and later won World Series rings with Arizona and Boston, was broadcasting Little League World Series games when he was disciplined.

"Curt's tweet was completely unacceptable, and in no way represents our company's perspective," ESPN said in a statement. "We made that point very strongly to Curt and have removed him from his current Little League assignment pending further consideration."

The tweet was later deleted. Schilling called it "a bad decision," according to ESPN.com.

Stanton close to returning

Miami Marlins rightfielder Giancarlo Stanton says he's about 11/2 weeks from rejoining the lineup after being sidelined since June 26 with a broken left hand.

Stanton doesn't expect to go on a minor-league rehabilitation stint. The all-star led the majors with 27 homers and 67 RBIs when he was hurt.

The Washington Nationals reinstated Denard Span for Tuesday's game after the centerfielder missed 40 games with a back injury.
