Editor's Note: This house is now under contract.

When Rick Banister, Jr. bought his Newbold home in 2007, he was barely out of college. He was drawn to the corner property for two big reasons: potential for a second-floor deck and a two-car garage for his woodworking projects. He rented a couple of the four bedrooms out to help cover the mortgage.

By 2009, he was engaged to Ada Egloff. She moved in, and they set to work renovating the place.

"The kitchen was pretty revolting," Egloff said. But the bones were good.

The couple tore out carpeting to make way for walnut parquet flooring and refinished the kitchen and the bath. Subway tile filled both rooms. A good friend who happened to be a cabinetmaker installed custom cabinetry.

Egloff said the couple put the most work into the kitchen renovation. "Starting with a blank slate meant we didn't have to make any compromises to get the most efficient layout," she said. "There are more than 50 square feet of counter space in a 14 by 14 room."

The kitchen remains the couple's favorite part of the home, given their interest in hosting and entertaining.

"We designed it to have a large, open work surface that doubles as a bar or breakfast table," Egloff said.

In addition to the kitchen, Egloff said the couple appreciates the windows on the side of the home, which set it apart from other rowhomes with windows only in the front and back.

"With all the western windows, we love any part of the house between four and six p.m. when all the light comes in," she said.

During the renovation, the couple also rebuilt the big deck.

"We think the second floor deck is nicer than a back yard since the elevation provides privacy," Egloff said.

Now that both Egloff and Banister are working from home, they've decided it's time to pursue their mutual dream of renovating a farmhouse somewhere along the East Coast.

"We won't ever have more energy than we do now, so we might as well get started on the next project," Egloff said.

The home is currently listed with Dominic Fuscia at Coldwell Banker Preferred for $325,000.
