When Joshua and Geraldine Liao moved into their two-bedroom home in Naval Square three years ago, they were drawn by the history.

"The Naval Square community has an unmistakably historic feel to it," Geraldine said.

Their unit is one of just four in the former surgeon general's mansion within the Naval Square community.

"It was that much more appealing to have the chance to own in one of the community's few original buildings," Geraldine said.

The 1,100-square-foot residence features a unique floorplan and finishes the Liaos were happy to leave untouched after moving in in 2014. Primarily, the couple said they loved the light in the home.

"Exposures on three sides provide abundant natural light for activities in common living spaces," Joshua said.

While their home is rare in terms of the broader Naval Square community, the Liaos said the access to shared amenities was key to their happiness there. Now that their home is on the market, they are betting new owners will be drawn to the same details they were.

"The chance to own a unique piece of history while accessing everything Naval Square has to offer as a community – including the chance to picnic and relax on the sprawling lawn and attend fun, social community events," Geraldine said.

Since moving in, the couple has also witnessed an evolution of the neighborhood surrounding the gated community.

"The surrounding development outside the community has also made the South-of-South area a fantastic place to live," Joshua said. "The Triangles of Grays Ferry Avenue project – which closed off and repurposed a triangular wedge of road near South Street for neighborhood use – now provides beautiful green space," he said.

Despite their attachment to the community, the Liaos have decided now is the time to sell their home.

"We are facing the only one thing that would make us part from the home," Joshua said. "A long-distance move to be closer to family."

The home is currently listed by Skye Michiels at Real Estate with Heart for $435,000.
