When John Hauser and his husband George moved to Philadelphia from Los Angeles in 2008, it was their dream to live in a Richard Neutra house. When they found one for sale in the East Falls neighborhood of the city, they knew it would be theirs.

"The first time we saw the house, we just looked at each other and said 'We are going to live here,' regardless of the condition it was in," Hauser said.

The five-bedroom residence, commissioned in 1958 by artist Kenneth Hassrick for his family, was designed by famed modernist architect Neutra and features woodwork by George Nakashima.

"George and I could see that this was an incredible house, and really just needed to have the finishes updated," Hauser said.

When the couple bought the home, it had been in foreclosure for several years.

"We bought the house and spent a year renovating before we could move in," Hauser said.

They made cosmetic updates inside and out, adding professional landscaping and gardens.

"The house has a great relationship to the outdoors," Hauser said.

The home is situated on two private acres and features Neutra's signature walls of glass overlooking the gardens. Hauser said the mid-century modern style they evoke will be a selling point now that the home is on the market.

"The walls of glass, open floor plan and private outdoor space," he said. "It's hard to believe you are in the city, still."

He said the East Falls neighborhood is another selling point.

"East Falls is a nice, quiet neighborhood that's so close to Center City."

Hauser said the couple is looking to move back to Los Angeles, but only because he is no longer working in Philadelphia.

"It's heartbreaking leaving this house," he said. "It's been a dream to live here and we have been so lucky to have experienced [Neutra's] house."

The home is currently listed with Craig Wakefield at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices for $2.195 million.
