Council: We want Uber and Lyft, too

Philadelphia city council on Thursday urged the state legislature to adopt rules to govern ride-share operators such as Uber and Lyft, and to include Philadelphia in any such legislation.

Philadelphia city council on Thursday urged the state legislature to adopt rules to govern ride-share operators such as Uber and Lyft, and to include Philadelphia in any such legislation.

The resolution, sponsored by James Kenney and approved unanimously, said "Philadelphia residents are being unfairly discriminated against by allowing this service in every other county in the Commonwealth" but not Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Parking Authority, a state agency that regulates taxis in Philadelphia, has banned ride-sharing operations as illegal taxis. In the rest of the state, Uber and Lyft have won approval from the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, which regulates taxis outside of Philadelphia.
