Crude oil and diesel fuel prices were surging this morning, but gasoline prices held steady overnight in southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey, the AAA Mid-Atlantic auto club said.

The average for a gallon of regular gasoline in Philadelphia and surrounding Pennsylvania counties stood this morning at $3.16. The average was steady at $2.97 in South Jersey, AAA said.

Diesel, however, rose to new highs - $3.92 per gallon in southeastern Pennsylvania, and $3.65 in South Jersey.

The national gasoline average, meanwhile, hit a new 2008 record at $3.18 per gallon, and diesel rose to an all-time national record at $3.70 per gallon.

Crude oil prices were surging after the government's report of a drop in stockpiles, the Associated Press reported.

Most analysts had expected oil supplies to rise. Light, sweet crude for April delivery was up $2.90 a barrel at $102.42 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
