Slaughterhouse recalls 529 pounds of beef tongue

Larry's Custom Meats Inc., of Hartwick, recalled 529 pounds of beef tongue products sent to Pennsylvania and New York because they might have been shipped with lingual tonsils still attached.

A slaughterhouse has recalled 529 pounds of beef tongue sent to retail locations in New York and Pennsylvania.

The products, from Larry's Custom Meats Inc. in Hartwick, N.Y., might have been shipped to the outlets with lingual tonsils still attached, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Friday.

Lingual tonsils are small mounds of lymphatic tissue located at the base of the tongue. FSIS prohibits their use in human food because there is a risk the tissue could contain the infective agent in cattle suffering from bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease.

Discovered during in-plant verification activities, the problem affects 1-1/2-pound packages of Larry's Custom Meats beef tongue produced on various dates between Oct. 23, 2014 and June 12, 2015 and bearing the establishment number "EST. 40359" inside the USDA mark of inspection, according to the FSIS.

Though neither the FSIS nor Larry's have received a report of an adverse reaction due to consumption of the beef tongue products, anyone concerned about an injury or illness is advised to contact a healthcare provider.
