Gas drops to $2.08 in Phila., price wars in Midwest

Gasoline prices continued to fall in the region last week, though the average retail price of $2.08 per gallon in Philadelphia is still well above the national average of $1.90 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.com.

Gasoline prices continued to fall in the region last week, though the average retail price of $2.08 per gallon in Philadelphia is still well above the national average of $1.90 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.com.

But nothing can match the madness taking place in Michigan, where a price war has broken out among some retailers. One station in Houghton Lake on Sunday lowered its price to 47 cents per gallon, according to Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst.

The retailer's price did not even cover the cost of taxes -- the combined state and federal gasoline tax in Michigan is 48.94 cents per gallon, according to the American Petroleum Institute (taxes are 68.8 cents per gallon in Pennsylvania and 32.9 cents per gallon in New Jersey).
