Over the objections of some anti-drilling activists, Gov. Wolf on Thursday signed a bill that would encourage the use of coal mine water for hydraulic fracturing of natural-gas wells.

Over the objections of some anti-drilling activists, Gov. Wolf on Thursday signed a bill that would encourage the use of coal mine water for hydraulic fracturing of natural-gas wells.

Senate Bill 875, now known as Act 47, limits potential liabilities for producers who use the polluted mine water to replace fresh water in the fracking process. Gas producers were concerned they would be liable for cleaning up mine water they didn't pollute, in perpetuity.

Activists had urged Wolf to veto the measure.
