The company obtained a video-franchise license from the city earlier this year to compete with Comcast Corp., the nation's No. 1 cable company with headquarters in the city.

Verizon Communications Inc. workers began today upgrading the phone company's telephone network in Philadelphia for high-speed FiOS Internet and TV services. The company obtained a video-franchise license from the city earlier this year to compete with Comcast Corp., the nation's No. 1 cable company with headquarters in the city.

The first neighborhood for the Verizon upgrade will be Chestnut Hill, followed by Brewerytown, East and West Mount Airy, South Philadelphia and Kensington, Verizon spokeswoman Sharon Shaffer said.

About 500 workers will be upgrading Verizon's network in Philadelphia for FiOS, the company says. The city's first Philadelphia FiOS customers should get the service by late 2009.
