Snow, rain, both scarce

It's been quite dry, but that's about to end.

Not surprisingly, the threat of any freezing precipitation anywhere near Philadelphia tomorrow is off the table.

Instead, expect a plain, old chilly rain to start late morning and continue into the evening, with totals in the 0.5- to 0.75-inch range. It's been awhile since we've had a soaking.

February has been quite mild, and it's one more reason that the winter of 2011-12 is going to be one of the warmest on record.

It also has been quite dry, with only 0.81 inches of precipitation measured at Philadelphia International Airport since Feb. 1, or 1.79 inches under normal.

This follows a mild January in which precipitation finished at 2.59 inches, or 0.44 below normal.

We've written that the region is way overdue for drought, and, fortunately, it appears we will have to wait at least a little longer.

As for snow, it appears more and more as though we'll have to wait until next winter.

No new threats are on the horizon, and the latest-two-week outlook into mid-March has a toasty look.

Meanwhile, Valdez, Alaska, was at 403.9 inches and counting, or just over 100 times Philadelphia's official snow total this season.
