Snow: We're No. 5

Official Philadelphia total passes 50 inches for season; third place in sight.

Officially, 8.8 inches of snow has fallen at Philadelphia International Airport/National Park so far, and that total could increase tonight.

As of now, the seasonal total stands at 52.1 inches, the fifth snowiest winter in the period of record, dating to 1884-85.

This also marks the fourth storm of 8 or more inches in a season; before this winterr, Philadelhpia never had more than three in a single season..

The seasonal total is roughly 2 1/2 times the average of about 22 inches.

With the latest storm, this season has knocked out one of the susperstars in the period of record, 1960-61, from fifth place.

That remains the only season with three double-digit snowfalls.

Just ahead in the seasonal standings are two heavyweights, 1977-78, and 1898-99. Before this storm finally pulls away, it's not out of the question that they, too, will fall, along with more snow.

Here is the old Top 10 list.
