Singer-songwriter Ryan Adams took the revamped Daily Show stage Thursday evening to strum tunes off his latest album of Taylor Swift cover songs.

The Grammy-nominated artist first announced plans to cover Swift's pop record 1989 earlier this year, telling NME of the inspiration for the project, "I don't know why I had this idea. I was going through a sort of difficult time in my life." Back in January he and wife Mandy Moore split after six years of marriage.

As for Swift, she's s fan of the artist's covers. "You can tell he was in a very different place emotionally when he made the album that I did," she said during a phone call to Beats 1. She also pointed out an "aching sadness that doesn't exist in the original."

Adams has cited Bruce Springsteen's 1989 acoustic-driven album Nebraska as inspiration for the 1989 cover album.
