President Obama to binge-watch 'Game of Thrones' and 'True Detective'

President Barack Obama is just like the rest of us, as he plans to spend his snowy weekend marathoning television shows he's fallen behind on. President Barack Obama is just like the rest of us, as he plans to spend his weekend marathoning television shows he's fallen behind on. At the state dinner for France, on Tuesday, President Obama sought out the head of HBO in an effort to procure his DVDs because, apparently, he's too good for HBO Go, or something.

Mr. Obama made a point of approaching HBO's chief executive, Richard Plepler, at the state dinner for France on Tuesday night.

"Where is my True Detective and Game of Thrones?" Mr. Obama asked Mr. Plepler as he told him that the coming weekend would be a good time to have the DVDs.

That Mr. Obama is a fan of "True Detective" should come as no surprise. He is known to favor dark dramas like AMC's "Breaking Bad" and HBO's "The Wire." Those are now off the air, and the president evidently needed to find a replacement.

If you haven't had the pleasure of checking out True Detective, yet, you'd be wise to give the Matthew McConaughey series a try. It starts off a little slow, for some, but the fourth episode ends with a fit of action that'll leave you rabid for the second half of the season.

Plus, if the show is good enough for the President of the United States (who happens to have pretty good taste in television), it's probably good enough for the rest of us. [New York Times]
