Crocodile Hunter's teenage daughter tells Hillary Clinton to shove it, pulls essay from consideration

POSTED: Friday, January 25, 2013, 9:05 AM
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton gestures as she testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on the deadly September attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

The Herald Sun has published an article about Bindi Irwin—the 14-year-old daughter of the late Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin—and her ordeal with the office of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Irwin was reportedly asked to write an essay, for Clinton's e-journal, discussing overpopulation.

"I don't believe there's any one solution for our population crisis but I think if we're able to open up the Pandora's Box and start discussing it change can be made."

Irwin says she dedicated a great deal of time and effort into her work. She discussed the issue with Australian entrepenuer Dick Smith.

"I really sat down and thought about what messages I wanted to get across, what I talked about with Dick Smith and my own experiences," she said.

"I sat down on my own and wrote the entire thing myself. I just used the resources I had around me for specific facts and then wrote it from my heart. The essay is me.

But, after Clinton's office got its paws on Irwin's work and liberally applied that "redacted" marker from the Zero Dark Thirty credits, the piece was unrecognizable and Irwin was NOT having it. She was all, "awwww hell naw."

She went ahead and withdrew her essay, suggesting that she'd still be happy if Secretary Clinton's office would reconsider publishing the original. Also, this:

"The true test of freedom of speech is when someone says something you don't like."

Wow. When I was 14 I dedicated my free time to an intense debate over the fantasy football merits of Rich Gannon and Daunte Culpepper and trying to figure out how to talk to girls (still working on this one, you guys). Irwin's spending her time trying to bring international attention to the growing population problem and fighting against censorship by telling Hillary Clinton to shove it. Yeah, she's probably going places.

Read more about Irwin's essay and the hubdub with Clinton's office at The Herald Sun.

Read Irwin's essay.
Read the edited version. [h/t news.com.au]

Why would the left ever want to discuss the overpopulation topic, as it feeds right into their entitlement program platform, which keeps getting them elected. Kinda like the heroin epidemic in Harlem in the '70s...keep feeding them that Magic, and they shall not question...

Actually...considering the right wants to get rid of contraception and abortion this is a ridiculous statement. Also, most of the right is extremely religious. Most religions believe the way to expand their religious organizations is by having children. So, who is against overpopulation?

huh? when did Bush ignore the pleas for help from our overseas personnel? Or when did he just "not read" the pleas? better yet when did Bush cover up a terrorist attack and bow down to muslims by blaming a video? oh btw, Bush did not order the Iraq war, CONGRESS DID

You're right 420Phillie, all Bush did was ignore pleas from the CIA about imminent attacks from al-Qaida, then run around like a chicken with his head cut off when it did happen until someone finally told him to what to do.

Why would the right ever want to discuss the overpopulation problem, as it feeds right into their efforts to de-value workers (supply and demand, the more workers there are looking for jobs, the less you need to offer them).

@teddybear415, good point. The right demands to know who knew what when about Bengazi, yet they never asked Bush why four thousand brave Americans died over imaginary weapons of mass destruction.

There she goes again. Clinton always has a solution to a world problem?? While she spends millions on a failed election, she is worried about too many people in the world. What a piece of work. She obvioiusly too care of 4 of the over population at bengazi. she even said what difference does it make who killed them and why!! Their Dead. Maybe she ought to work on the other two clintons that are taking up too much of the worlds space.

I suppose it's relative. After watching Secretary Powell make the case to the UN for invading Iraq and Condi "mushroom cloud" Rice, Clinton did an outstanding job.

Still waiting for you to name me 3 great achievements from ANY Secretary of State...

Sec of State Seward, from Lincoln's administration. He managed to keep the European nations out of the Civil War (no small feat, considering Britain wanted a foothold again in North America and desired trade directly with the South); he kept the North out of direct war with Britain after the Trent affair; oh, and he of course was the architect behind "Seward's Folly" - the purchase of Alaska from Russia.

If you believe she had Vince Foster killed then I wouldn't put it past you to believe 9/11 was an "inside job", Obama was born in Kenya and Sandy Hook was a "hoax". In other words, *Palin voice* How's that tin foil hat workin' out for ya?

I don't think the edited version is that bad. It makes the same points that Bindi did, just in a different style. It was edited to fit the audience of a government journal. Though both versions of the essay are equally persuasive and make the same conclusions using the same facts, Bindi's original is a very different voice.

I can see how a teenager would be very upset to see their voice almost entirely absent from their work.

Maybe I imagined that the intelligence reports on WMD tied in precisely with the Clinton Administration's assessments- with the entire free world's assessments. Amazing how the Obama apologists continue to say things like, "yeah but Bush did this and Bush did that..." How does that help us going forward? Why do people root for presidents and politicians like they're sports teams? We just need someone, anyone in power who can fix this country.

This has nothing to do with Mrs. Clinton personally.

Go and read the two articles linked and you will see the main difference:

As a 14-year old Bindi Irwin seems to represent her beliefs and judgments as inconvertible facts:
so it has been footed on more evidence and and part of the "controversial" like "family planning" and "sharing or not sharing of resources" or "what earth can support with present resources" judgments were removed.

So it was a big mistake to ask somebody like that to write an opinion piece when you yourself have to have other political and scientific considerations! So you don't publish it the way it is!

Bindi Irwin has every right not to accept the changes!

What does this have anything to do worth or not worth of anybody or how well the State Department is run????

Not sure if Secretary Clinton had an issue with Bindi Irwin talking about population control, about sustainable food sources, or what in hell the issue was. What Ms. Irwin talked about made perfectly logical sense. Not everyone HAS to agree with viewpoints submitted in an essay. They are designed as food for thought.

I'm no vegan, or even vegetarian. But I realize that we need to stop thinking of our food as coming from the supermarket, and be aware of how food is sourced whenever that's possible.

Contraception must be available to all who choose to practice it. It's a form of population control, STD control, and a means of economic empowerment for those whose incomes are limited and can only support a certain number of mouths.

So, Bindi...way to go. Keep on fighting and honoring your dad's memory by continuing his work...and by being a thoughtful young woman. You inspire many with wisdom well beyond your years.

The two articles were different. I was fourteen once and if someone had changed it that much, I would not have seen beyond the changes to understand why they were made. That being said, I think her voice, the teenage voice, was lost in translation. If the point was to capture a teenager's view, it probably did not require that much editing. She did make some sharp points that were rounded out such as pointing out that the 6th extinction was a theory, not fact. I think that probably made her angry.

The original is not that great of an essay. The edited version is not as good, and constitutes bad editing, with unnecessary changes in many places and loss of the writer's voice.

This is news because celebrities are in conflict. Neither Bindi nor Hillary figure heavily in world progress right now. Clinton would do well to focus on the minor matter of killing people in small nations, where the U.S. feels it can do anything it wants by virtue of superior military power. Bindi may want to get a deeper, wider view of the world, moving away from the celebrity life of a wildlife warrior.

    1) The Trent affair was caused by the US, it would today be seen as a massive violation of diplomatic rights. The US released diplomats AFTER England threatened war and built troops up in Canada, not to mention Seward blamed Wilkes for the whole deal.

    2) Seward also was a advocate for the US invading nearby islanda and taking them

    3) England did not enter the war because the Confederates could not give them a solid military victory, not to mention England had banned slavery and could recognize them.

    Hello,
My first thought is where exactly did the young lady say to Mrs. Clinton "shove it?" This seems to be a way the press has elected to present this "news" item to sell papers. Having been suffered misrepresentation in the press myself I understand how one's feelings can be hurt when you are reported as saying something that you did not say.
Second, did it say anywhere in the essay/application anything about the possiblitiy of editing being done to meet the requirements as set by the Clinton organization or was this essay unsolicited and just something that the young lady felt called to do?
In either case, she has learned that when you submitt your words to another, almost anything can happen unless you have a contract. Lastly, she is a kid, her feelings were hurt, but she will grow and learn from this event.

Once they tell a story they can't update the story, change the story, based on new information. Whatever is first reported is the only truth.

What does that mean? There is so little detail in this post, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
