Weekend event picks: 'Frozen’ fun at Winterfest, birthdays & more

Bavaria comes to Bucks County for four days of German culture and cuisine for Peddler's Village Bavarian Celebration. From Thursday, Jan. 15 through Sunday, Jan. 18, feast on a four-course wild game dinner paired with German wines, sip on traditional beers, and chow down a German Sunday brunch at Earl's Bucks County (2400 Street Rd., New Hope).

Known for their rock 'n' roll cabaret style, BRAT Productions returns with a retelling of their 2014 sold-out performance "Always Coming Soon: The Future." In a largely physical performance taking cues from clown and absurdist theater, the cast of misfits struggle with the existential questions that come with thinking of the past, present and future. "The Future" touches down at the Painted Bride Art Center (230 Vine St.) at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15, 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16 and 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17.

Though the subject matter of his work leans to the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe still would've wanted you to celebrate his birthday. All weekend at the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site (532 N. 7th St.), guides will give tours of the house, read Poe's stories and poems, lead children in activities, and more. Oh, and there's cake. Programming takes place between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17 and Sunday, Jan. 18 (but note the house is closed from noon to 1 p.m.).

Why stop at one birthday when you can celebrate two? One of Philly's main men, Benjamin Franklin, gets the star treatment with events at the Independence Visitor Center (6th and Market Streets), Historic Philadelphia Center (6th and Chestnut Streets), the National Constitution Center (525 Arch St.) and more throughout the day on Saturday, Jan. 17 and Sunday, Jan. 18.

Where fact meets fiction, the Academy of Natural Sciences (1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway) presents its Animal Mythology Weekend, where from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Saturday, Jan. 17 to Monday, Jan. 19, the venue holds information sessions on the real-life animals that inspired some of the creepiest on-screen and in-text fictional monsters.

The first of two Philadelphia Home Show weekends sets up shop in the Pennsylvania Convention Center (12th and Arch Streets) for three days of vendors, DIY sessions and celeb sightings in an effort to get your home and garden in tip-top shape for spring. The show runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18 and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19.

The "Frozen" fever won't let up. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is throwing a "Frozen"-themed day at Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest (201 S. Columbus Blvd.) to get the public pumped for the upcoming PHS Flower Show. From noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, belt out the movie's songs for a sing-along screening, take pics in the photo booth, and enjoy giveaways. Hang around until 8 p.m. for the second Fireside Session featuring performances from Son Little and Dirty Dollhouse.

Beyond the over 150 craft beers available at XFinity Live!'s (3601 S. Broad St.) Winterfest Live, attendees can sample whiskey, enter a bratwurst-eating contest, and more. Entry to the event on Saturday, Jan. 17 gets you unlimited sampling, live music and free parking. Doors open at 3 p.m.

Parents: Leave the kids at home when you head to the Philadelphia Zoo (3400 W. Girard Ave.) on Saturday, Jan. 17 for an adults-only sleepover. Show up at 6:30 p.m. and see what night owls (and other animals) do when the sun goes down. Bring your sleeping bag and get ready for a wild night.

Get a taste of partying in Miami, Vegas and Ibiza, all while never having to leave the Crystal Tea Room (100 Penn Square East) at Saturday, Jan. 17's Hair 'O The Dog benefit. Benefiting the Unico Charities Philadelphia Chapter, the event — beginning at 9 p.m. — features music, drinks and food along with a trio of party vibes.
