Weekend event picks: Exhibit, show closings & more

We wonder how stale these gingerbread houses are. On display since late November, Peddler's Village (Routes 202 and 263, Lahaska) gingerbread house display crumbles on Saturday, Jan. 3. Don't miss the opportunity to peep the sweet artifices between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. Friday, Jan 2. And Saturday, Jan. 3.

Before the season premiere of "Downton Abbey," don't miss the last few days of Winterthur Museum's (5105 Kennett Pike, Wilmington, Del.) "Costumes of Downton Abbey" exhibit, showing the fashions and wears of your favorite ladies and maids like Mary, Edith and Mrs. Hughes. The collection closes for good on Sunday, Jan. 4 and the museum is open 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. this weekend.

Another collection of art closing on Sunday, Jan. 4 at a local museum is photographer Paul Strand's retrospective at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (26th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway). The exhibit features over 200 prints of street portraits and photos from the Southwest, Mexico, New England, France, Italy, Scotland, Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, and Romania from the 1910s through the 1960s. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 2 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3 and Sunday, Jan. 4.

The miniature railway at Morris Arboretum (100 E. Northwestern Ave.), adorned in its holiday best, gets packed away for the season after Sunday, Jan. 4. See it before then between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Artifacts from six slave families who called Monticello home have been on display at the National Constitution Center (525 Arch St.) since April. Final call for "Slavery at Jefferson's Monticello" is this weekend, when it closes on Sunday, Jan. 4. The museum's open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 2, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3 and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 4.

The jolly holiday is almost over at Walnut Street Theatre (825 Walnut St.). Their production of "Mary Poppins" comes to a close this weekend with four more performance times: 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 2, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3 and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 4.

Prior to your exciting afternoon at the Hagley Museum (200 Hagley Creek Rd., Wilmington, Del.), stop by the Belin House for the last weekend of their holiday brunch offering. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3 and Sunday, Jan. 4, chow down on classic brunch offerings like French toast, grilled cheese and crabcakes.

Before the Wells Fargo Center (3601 S. Broad St.) lets it go, see the Disney phenomenon "Frozen" in all its frigid glory — on ice. Final shows are at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 2, 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3 and Sunday, Jan. 4.

If you didn't get your shopping fix over the past few weeks, the Spring Garden Indoor Antique and Vintage Flea Market returns to the Fed-Ex Service Center (820 Spring Garden St.) for its 2015 debut, featuring over 100 vendors selling furniture, clothing, accessories, artwork and more from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3.

Fusing acrobatics and orchestra, "Cirque de la Symphonie" returns for the second time to the Kimmel Center (Broad and Spruce Streets) for an adrenaline-pumping show of high-flying flips and feats of strength above the stage, while down below the Philadelphia Orchestra will perform a program of orchestral numbers. Catch the performance at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3 or 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 4.
