For the dogs: Events for you and Fido

Philly loves their pets and they want everyone to know about it. Through the following events, money, awareness and good times are raised in honor of the animals that inhabit our homes.

Philly loves their pets and they want everyone to know about it. Through the following events, money, awareness and good times are raised in honor of the animals that inhabit our homes.

Raise money for the Humane League of Philadelphia at the Philly Walk for Animals 2014. The day starts with a 2.5 mile walk, starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 17 at the Rotunda in University City and is followed by a festival, where adoption booths will be set up as well as raffles and information on how visitors can get involved with the Humane League. Naturally, pets are welcome.

Also on Saturday, May 17 dog-owners and their pets will race around Cooper River Park Stadium in Pennsauken, NJ for the Paws & Feet 5k Race and Doggie Fun day. In support of the Animal Welfare Association, the 5k run and walk starts at 9 a.m. Throughout the rest of the day, there will be pet contests, demonstrations, an agility course and a pet costume contest.

For a more low-key event, get to Mondauk Manor Park in Fort Washington, PA on Saturday, May 17 for free coffee and a chance to chat with other owners from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. for Mornings in MonDaug Bark Park.

Philadelphia rescue groups and pet shelters will come to the Piazza in Northern Liberties on Sunday, May 18 to show off adoptable pets to potential owners during Super Adoption Day.  Organized by Citizens for a No-Kill Philadelphia, the day starts at 11 a.m. and will offer family-friendly games and entertainment as well.

Leave the dogs at home and raise money for improvements of the Columbus Park Dog Run at South Philly's Noir Restaurant and Bar for a special quizzo hosted by quiz master James Decker. Mix and mingle with other dog owners on Monday, May 19 from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Pet owners with a love of baseball are in luck on Saturday, May 24. The second annual Bark in the Park at Citizens Bank Park allows the first 50 dogs whose owners have previously purchased a "dog ticket" (a donation to the Pennsylvania SPCA) access to the Budweiser Rooftop Bleachers to watch the 3:05 p.m. game.

Bring those city dogs to the woods on Saturday, May 31 for a guided nature walk at the Silver Lake Nature Center in Bristol, PA. The one-hour walk begins at 11 a.m.; afterward VCA Animal Hospital will provide microchipping.

Meet the dog whose story inspired the children's book Bark! Bark! Bark for My Park! at Norristown Farm Park at noon on Saturday, May 31 for the annual Bark! Bark! Bark for Our Park! celebration. Author and veterinarian Jessica Dimuzio will be at the Norristown, PA park to sign copies of the book, and rescue dogs will be available for adoption. Bring your pup, but make sure they're leashed.
